Myths & Misconceptions

Reiki gathers a fair share of misunderstanding. Here are some common claims, set gently beside a more honest picture.

MYTHReiki can cure diseases.
IN REALITY

Reiki is a practice for relaxation and well-being, not a treatment for illness. It should never replace medical care. Where people feel benefit, it usually overlaps with the value of rest and calm attention.

MYTHReiki is a religion you must convert to.
IN REALITY

It is not a religion and requires no belief or conversion. Its principles are ethical reflections, not doctrine, and people of every background practise it.

MYTHYou need a special gift to practise.
IN REALITY

No special talent is needed. Reiki is taught to ordinary people in ordinary classes; the attunement and steady practice are what matter, not any innate power.

MYTHReiki and its "energy" are proven by science.
IN REALITY

Reiki has never needed a laboratory to help the people who turn to it. The idea of a channelled energy belongs to its tradition rather than to science, and that is perfectly all right — you can enjoy Reiki wholeheartedly for the calm and comfort it brings while holding its claims gently. Not everything that helps has yet been measured.

MYTHThere is one true, original form of Reiki.
IN REALITY

Reiki branched into many schools as it spread. Japanese and Western lineages differ in terms and emphasis, and none holds a monopoly on the "real" practice.

MYTHA session involves massage or manipulation.
IN REALITY

The touch is light and still, often only hovering above the body. There is no rubbing, pressing, or physical manipulation of any kind.

MYTHReiki only helps if you believe in it.
IN REALITY

You are welcome to arrive sceptical. Reiki asks for no faith and no particular mindset — many people come purely curious, or simply exhausted, and still leave feeling calmer. An open, relaxed attitude helps you settle, but belief is not a fee at the door.

MYTHYou have to be special or gifted to practise.
IN REALITY

Not at all. Reiki is taught to ordinary people in ordinary classes; what matters is the attunement from a teacher and a little steady practice, not any rare talent. If you can rest your hands gently and pay quiet attention, you can practise Reiki.
