A first Reiki session is calm and undemanding. Knowing the shape of it in advance tends to make the whole thing easier to settle into.
Before you begin
The practitioner will usually start with a short chat — why you have come, anything they should know, and what will happen. You stay fully clothed throughout; you will simply remove your shoes and anything bulky, then lie on a treatment couch or sit comfortably. There is nothing you need to do or believe.
During the session
Once you are settled, the practitioner rests their hands gently on or just above your body, moving slowly through a series of positions from head to feet over roughly an hour. There is no massage and no pressure. The room is usually quiet or softly musical, and you are free to close your eyes and rest.
How it may feel
People commonly notice warmth from the hands, a gentle tingling, a pleasant heaviness, or simply deep relaxation — and many drift toward sleep. Others feel very little the first time. Both are completely normal; there is no correct experience, and nothing you need to make happen.
Afterwards
The practitioner will let you come back gently and may offer a few words or a glass of water. Take a moment before you stand. Most people leave feeling calm and a little slowed-down, in the best sense — which is a lovely note on which to end.
Just arrive a few minutes early, reasonably rested, and open. Everything else the practitioner will guide you through on the day.
