Pronunciation Guide

How to say the Japanese words you will meet in Reiki — spoken more simply than they often look.

Japanese pronunciation is far more regular than English, and the Reiki words are easier to say than they look. A few simple habits will carry you through almost all of them.

A few simple rules

Vowels are steady and clean — a as in "father," e as in "get," i as in "machine," o as in "go," u as in "flute." Each vowel keeps its sound, syllables are given roughly even weight, and there is no strong stress as in English. Say each part clearly and evenly, and you will be close.

Common Reiki words

The words you will meet most often:

Reiki 霊気
RAY-kee

Universal life energy; the practice itself.

Gassho 合掌
GAH-show

Palms held together at the heart.

Byosen 病腺
BYOH-sen

The felt sense that guides the hands.

Reiji-ho 霊示法
RAY-jee-hoh

Letting the hands be guided intuitively.

Hatsurei-ho 発霊法
HAT-soo-ray-hoh

A daily energy-cultivation routine.

Kenyoku 乾浴
KEN-yoh-koo

The "dry bathing" clearing gesture.

Names and lineage

The names in Reiki’s story follow the same gentle rules:

Mikao Usui 臼井甕男
mee-KAH-oh OO-swee

The founder of Reiki.

Chujiro Hayashi 林忠次郎
choo-JEE-roh ha-YAH-shee

Who structured the method.

Hawayo Takata 高田ハワヨ
hah-WAH-yoh tah-KAH-tah

Who brought Reiki west.

A NOTE

These are gentle English approximations, not strict phonetics. Hearing a teacher say the words is always the best guide.
