Distance Reiki

The practice of offering Reiki to someone who is not in the room — across a city, or across the world.

Once a practitioner reaches the second degree (Okuden), they learn to offer Reiki at a distance — to a friend in another city, a relative in hospital, or simply someone who cannot be there in person.

The idea

In the Reiki tradition, the connection between practitioner and receiver is not thought to depend on being in the same room. With focused intention and the distant-healing symbol, a practitioner sets out to offer the same gentle, supportive attention across any distance. Whether one accepts the underlying idea or not, many people find the experience calming — and that is reason enough for most to try it.

How it is done

Practitioner and receiver usually agree on a time. At that time the practitioner settles into a quiet space, draws or visualises the distant symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen), and brings the person clearly to mind. Some use a stand-in to represent them — a cushion, a photograph, or even their own knee — resting their hands there for around twenty to thirty minutes as they would in a normal session.

What it is like to receive

The receiver does not need to do anything but make a little room for rest. At the agreed time they sit or lie down somewhere comfortable and let themselves relax. Some notice warmth, a soft tingling, or a wave of calm much like an in-person session; others simply enjoy a quiet pause in the day. Both are perfectly normal.

A note on expectations

Distance Reiki is offered in the same spirit as any other session: as gentle support for relaxation and balance, alongside medical care rather than in place of it. It asks for openness, not belief, and its value is best measured in calm rather than in cures.

TO TRY IT

Agree a time with your practitioner, put your phone aside, and give yourself twenty quiet minutes to rest. Nothing more is needed from you than a willingness to settle.

Frequently asked questions

Which level do I need to offer distance Reiki?

Distance Reiki is traditionally learned at the second degree, Okuden.

How long does a distance session last?

Around twenty to thirty minutes, much as a normal session would. Practitioner and receiver usually agree on a time in advance.

Does the receiver need to do anything?

No. The receiver only needs to make a little room for rest — to sit or lie down somewhere comfortable at the agreed time and relax.
