Gendai Reiki Ho (現代靈氣法), "modern Reiki method," was founded in Japan in the 1990s by Hiroshi Doi, a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.
What Gendai Reiki is
Gendai Reiki was created to bring together two streams that had grown apart: the traditional Japanese practice preserved by the Gakkai, and the Western Reiki that had developed from Takata’s lineage. Doi set out to combine the strengths of both into a single, practical modern system.
Bridging east and west
It was one of the styles that helped reintroduce Japanese techniques — the precepts, the meditations, and practices like Hatsurei-ho and Byosen scanning — to practitioners abroad who had learned only the Western form. In doing so it played a real part in the wider rediscovery of Reiki’s Japanese roots.
Its practice
Gendai Reiki keeps the familiar structure of levels and attunements, but places strong emphasis on daily self-practice, meditation, and personal growth alongside hands-on treatment. The aim is not only to treat others but to cultivate oneself, very much in the older Japanese spirit.
Where it sits
As a modern Japanese system with an international following, Gendai Reiki sits comfortably between tradition and innovation. It appeals especially to those who want the Japanese heart of the practice in a clear, contemporary form.
Gendai Reiki draws directly on the Gakkai tradition, which is part of why it is often grouped with the Japanese-style rather than the Western lineages.
