Reiki for Animals & Plants

How the same gentle practice can be offered to animals, and to the plants and gardens around us.

Reiki is not only for people. Many practitioners offer it to animals and to the living world around them — always gently, and always on the other creature’s terms.

Following their lead

Animals tend to be very direct about what they want. The kindest approach is to offer rather than impose: sit nearby, let them come to you, and let them move away when they have had enough. Many practitioners begin with the hands held a little distance from the body, watching for the animal to relax, lean in, or drift off to sleep before resting the hands more closely.

Animals large and small

With small pets, the hands might rest lightly on the body or hover just above it, and sessions are usually short — a few minutes can be plenty. With larger animals such as horses or dogs, it is common to stand at a respectful distance with the hands near the body rather than on it. Nervous, elderly, or rescued animals often respond especially well to a calm, unhurried presence — though Reiki is a comfort, never a replacement for a vet.

Plants and gardens

The living world extends to plants, too. Some practitioners hold seeds or cuttings in their hands for a moment, rest their hands near a pot, or simply carry a calm, attentive intention while they garden. Others like to offer Reiki to a whole garden as a small quiet ritual — less a technique than a way of tending with care.

A gentle approach

The guiding idea throughout is gentleness: no pressure, no forcing, and a close eye for the signs that a creature has had enough. Kept this way, Reiki becomes a peaceful way to spend time with the animals and plants you share your life with.

PLEASE NOTE

Reiki supports relaxation and comfort only. For any illness or injury in an animal, always see a veterinarian first.
